Monday marked the first day of Forever-Fit Summer Camp 2013! Campers arrived ready and willing for a fun-filled, active next six weeks of summer.

Ms. Elizabeth helps lead the campers in creating rules for the camp.

Before the fun could get underway, there were some rules to establish. Campers and counselors collaborated with Ms. Elizabeth to lay down the laws of the camp. A whopping 21 rules were established (who knew rules could be so fun for kids?)—most of which were eager activity wishes, but some had a deeper message.

No. 1: Have fun every day—a crucial rule for life, if you ask me.
No. 6: Try my best at everything—setting the tone for a summer filled with determination and strength.
No. 18: Have patience—results don’t show up overnight; a little patience pays plenty.

Already true to the guidelines they established, the campers went right outside to start their activities. They got their legs working with a brisk mile walk on the track, their feet kicking with a small soccer obstacle course, and their hearts pumping in a little game of color tag. Appetites piqued, they came inside for a delicious, portion-friendly meal of whole-grain spaghetti and broccoli made by Chef Chelsea.

The campers are already taking steps in the right direction during their first day at Forever-Fit.

The smiles and eager conversations during the first lunch made it clear that the spirit of this group of campers was shining through. The next six weeks are already looking brighter than ever.

Stay tuned for a photo gallery to meet this year’s campers and check out their goals for the summer!

An array of emotions struck both campers and counselors as they watched the first flood of cars pull away from the Fitness Farm. Just like that, it was done. The 2012 Forever-Fit Summer Camp concluded in dramatic fashion, and the time came for campers to take responsibility for their own health. Although this is a difficult demand for a group of 8- to 12-year-old children, Forever-Fit staff are confident that the kids will resist their pre-camp tendencies and continue to maintain healthy behavioral patterns.

“I expect that they will continue to push themselves after camp, and I hope that they continue to incorporate small changes into their everyday life,” says Jessica Mullin, a two-year Forever-Fit counselor. “It’s a short amount of time to really cement lifestyle changes, but I think the camp exposed the kids to activities and healthy eating in a way that was fun and non-threatening.”

The children went on weekly field trips, engaged in countless water balloon fights, and spent many hours swimming, biking, and participating in numerous sporting events. However, for six consecutive weeks, campers also followed a strictly regulated program where they withstood tough physical training, adjusted their undesirable eating habits, and essentially surrendered all their unhealthy practices. Despite the difficulties that came with such demanding lifestyle transformations, the campers remained dedicated to the process and encouraged each other along the way.

“I’m going to miss everyone when I leave camp, especially the counselors,” camper Onivea Adams says. “They’re really fun, and they’re always nice to all of us… I think I’m going to come back next year because it was so fun to be with all of my friends.”

Participants can carry on the relationships they developed during camp by attending reunions at the Fitness Farm throughout the year, including a special Halloween event in October. Campers can also contact Forever-Fit staff for questions or support.

“[The kids] will always have continued support from Forever-Fit,” Mullin says.

Although this year’s camp has reached its end, the future of the Forever-Fit Camp looks promising as those in charge begin preparation for another successful summer. Come June, a fresh group of campers will experience life on the Fitness Farm. Despite only two full years of operation, Forever-Fit expectations remain high as staff members look to expand the reigns of their organization and impact the community on a much greater scale.

“I hope that the Forever-Fit Camp will continue to grow in the future and serve more children and families in Indianapolis and beyond,” Mullin says. “I would expect that the camp will search out innovative ways to reach its population and to be at the forefront to serve as a model for similar programs.”

Amidst a flurry of distractions from the media, Forever-Fit campers persevered through the chaos of week five, maintaining their focus and general fitness program. As a means of diversifying the summer experience and rewarding the kids for their patience, counselors and staff scheduled several new and exclusive activities throughout the week. On Tuesday and Thursday in particular, affiliates of the Saturday Evening Post visited the camp and introduced various crafts that were both useful and entertaining for the children.

Attempting to incorporate the provided words, campers Jataya and Maleya share each other's unfinished poems.

On their first visit, the special guests provided each camper with a copy of the Saturday Evening Post’s children’s magazine, Jack and Jill, and then directed their attention to the poems that appeared throughout the issue. After reading a few examples and explaining the freedom involved with poetry style, Jack and Jill Editor Corey Dalton asked the campers to provide him with a list of outlandish words as he listened and copied them down on the board. When the board was nearly full, the campers were asked to write a poem of their own using at least five of the designated words. After 15-20 minutes of silence, Corey instructed them to complete their work, allowing them to make their final adjustments and then proceeding to ask for volunteers to stand before the group and share their poems. It was a wonderful experience for all, and not only did campers improve both their poetic and oratory skills, they got a huge kick out of the ridiculous, yet very articulate, poetry verses they expressed aloud.

With various corn kernels spread out before her, camper Olivia carefully focuses on the construction of her colorful bracelet.

In an attempt to broaden the kids’ horizons, staff members from the Saturday Evening Post shifted gears in their second visit to the camp, this time bearing variously colored Indian corn kernels and presenting the kids with an opportunity to make their own bracelets. Prior to arrival, the guests marinated the kernels in water for 32 hours, giving them plenty of time to soak in the moisture. By the time they were transported to camp, the kernels were soft enough for the kids to prick with sewing needles and string onto their bracelets. Although the craft caused more difficulties than originally expected, all of the campers stuck with their projects, and each of them left the farm with a brand-new Indian corn bracelet draped around their wrists.

Because of its devoted staff and largely unrivaled benefits, the camp is making huge strides in the community and quickly evolving into a national model for obesity prevention.

On June 17 and 18, the Forever-Fit program made its television debut as Fox, CBS, and NBC crewmembers arrived on the farm to tour the facilities and interview both campers and directors. Shortly after the press arrived, Joan SerVaas, Forever-Fit director and CEO of the Saturday Evening Post Society, welcomed everyone and thanked them for coming before making a brief appearance in front of the cameras. She quickly turned the segment to a number of special guests, allowing them to introduce their respective fields and provide their expert opinions on the significance of the Forever-Fit program. Amongst others, the guests included Olgen Williams, deputy mayor of Indianapolis; Dr. Virginia A. Caine, director of the Marian County Health Department; Dr. Sandeep K. Gupta, director of Riley Hospital’s Pediatric Overweight and Education Research (POWER) at Indiana University Health; Audrey Sattleblom, Wellness coordinator for Indianapolis Public Schools; Dr. John Guare, a clinical associate professor at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis; Amanda Grant, a clinical dietician and program coordinator of the POWER program at Riley Hospital; and Dr. Leslie Schuh, a research scientist in the Bariatric Center of Excellence at St. Vincent’s Hospital.

Led by an Army ROTC unit based out of IUPUI, the Forever-Fit campers filed outside in three distinct marching lines and situated themselves before the lieutenants. As demonstrated by their presiding officers, the kids participated in a number of strength-building exercises, enjoying the opportunity to “join the command.” From outward lunges to full-range push-ups, they engaged in different drills and completed the training session with an Army march around the farm. The demonstration not only allowed them to partake in a full body workout, but it gave them the rare privilege of appearing on live television.

Ending as quickly as it began, the first annual Media Day at the Forever-Fit Summer Camp concluded at about 11:30 with the media outlets conducting last-minute interviews and packing up the news trucks. It was a wonderful day for everyone, and the people of Forever-Fit sincerely hope that the publicity will encourage combative action against the issues involving childhood obesity.

With only a few weeks left at the Forever-Fit Summer Camp, counselors and staff are making the most of the remaining days, filling all available time slots with fun, unique, and vigorous activities for the kids to explore.

Undistracted by her spectators, camper Perchauna uses the wood lathing machine to construct her ballpoint pen.

For many schools with limited budgets, industrial science courses are far from primary concern. Consequently, many students graduate from their respective high schools with little to no technical experience. Therefore, on Thursday of week four, the Forever-Fit counselors took it upon themselves to bring in three woodturning artists and provide the campers with an early opportunity to develop their mechanical minds. With careful supervision from the specialists, each kid took a turn strapping on protective eyewear and trialing the wood-lathing machines. In just a few short hours, they gathered more knowledge about applied sciences than many children receive in a lifetime and returned home at day’s end with brand-new, completely authentic, handcrafted ballpoint pens.

Keeping her eyes on the prize, camper Kyli releases the bowling ball down the lane.

Following the woodturning project on Thursday, camp proceedings switched from craft to sport as the kids loaded up the bus and headed for Woodland Bowl. They experienced a brief delay at the front desk but remained eager as they laced up their bowling shoes and spread out amongst the five assigned lanes. At the end of the afternoon, the campers had completed two full games and dramatically improved their bowling accuracy. Scores were extremely high across the board, and despite the availability of bumpers, the campers had almost no trouble keeping the ball away from the gutter. It was an enjoyable experience for all of those involved and an excellent way to end the fourth week of camp.

Having benefited from all sorts of knowledge pertaining to food and exercise, the Forever-Fit campers are nearly ready to complete their training and begin to make healthy lifestyle choices on their own. However, plenty remains in store for them as they approach their last few weeks of summer and prepare for the conclusion of camp.

Starting gymnastics at the ripe old age of 2, Samantha Peszek dreamed of one day competing in the Olympics.

“When I was little, I told people that I was going to be in the Olympics, and they would laugh at me,” Samantha said as she spoke to the U.S. Kids Forever Fit campers and counselors. “I wasn’t very good at gymnastics back then, so I don’t think people took me seriously when I said I was going to be an Olympic gymnast. But if you have goals or dreams, go after them and don’t let anyone stop you! You control you!”

Sam, as her friends call her, recently took time from her busy schedule to share with campers her experience of being an Olympic athlete. After countless hours of training, along with tons of determination and persistence, Sam’s dreams finally came true when she became a member of the 2008 U.S.A. Summer Olympics Gymnastics Team. However, things didn’t go quite as planned when Sam injured her ankle just as the gymnastics competition began.

“The first day of prelims during the last event of warm-up, I turned my ankle,” she said. “People across the room heard it pop. I think I tore about every ligament in my ankle, but I couldn’t show that I was in any pain as I made my way off the floor because that would have been a sign of team weakness to the other team.

“I still competed on the bars, but I had to switch roles a little,” she continued. “Instead of being a competitor, I became a motivator, trying to encourage all of my teammates. The switch was difficult for me, but it was what was best for our team. And that’s what I wanted the most, for our team to do well.”

It must have helped because the U.S.A. Gymnastics team won a silver medal, along with several individual gold and silver medals. As Sam told the campers, “Sometimes life throws you a curve ball and you don’t have control of that –– so your goals have to shift.”

Now, 20 years old and a full-time student at UCLA, Sam continues to compete in gymnastics at the university level. When asked about any thoughts of trying again for the Olympics team, Sam smiled and said, “No, I am a little too old. And the type of training required for college team gymnastics is completely different from the training needed as an Olympic gymnast. So, right now I am just focusing on competing for my university team.”

One of the campers asked if Sam always liked practicing while she was growing up. Sam replied that most of the time she loved it because all of her friends were there. But on those days when she really didn’t feel like practicing, it always helped to call on her friends or teammates for support and encouragement. “It’s not always easy—especially when you have to practice at least six hours every day. I had bad days too, but that helps you appreciate the good days,” said Sam.

“It is important for everyone to have goals each day—even if they are just little goals. You can start out small, like telling yourself you are going to drink an extra bottle of water each day.” Sam sais she likes to take Sundays to plan her goals for the week and what meals she will have.

“Are you ever tempted to not eat healthy or have a lazy day?” wondered one of the campers.

“Sure,” Sam said. “Sometimes I have frozen yogurt or pizza, but usually I eat healthy because as a gymnast, it is important to be in the best shape possible. It helps to have a partner you can call who will say, ‘Let’s go get a salad’ or ‘Let’s go for a bike ride.’ It’s easier to be active while hanging out if you have a partner of someone you can talk to.”

Sam’s favorite breakfast is scrambled eggs. “But oatmeal really fills me up, and breakfast before a practice is usually fruit,” she said. “When I eat healthy, I have more energy and am in a better mood. When I don’t eat healthy, I don’t feel as good or have as much energy.”

Balance has also been an important part of Sam’s life. Going to high school every day, having five to seven hours of practice, and then doing homework each night left Sam with little free time. But Sam said she learned to talk to her teachers about what was needed, work ahead on assignments, and use her time wisely so between school responsibilities, practice, traveling, and competitions, she still had time to hang out with her friends and family.

When asked what Sam’s biggest challenge was while training as a gymnast, she confided, “It was fear. And doing a round-off backhand spring was especially frightening! I would just lock up!”

Sam eventually learned to perfect that skill, and although she still fights fears, they are easier for her to face. Sam said her greatest accomplishment in gymnastics “was learning to overcome my fears. You discover that if at first you are not good at something, you can still excel with hard work and effort. I also learned to take a step back, a deep breathe, a drink of water, think about how to do the move, trust myself, and then go for it!”

Campers asked Sam if she had any pre-meet rituals or if she feels nervous before competitions. “I listen to music on my iPod. Music really inspires me!” she said. “But I like to perform and look at is as an opportunity to show others how hard I have worked and what I can do. It also motivates me to know that my accomplishments encourage others to live healthy lives.

“You always have choices,” she continued. “Write down what you love to do and see how you can relate it to exercise and your everyday activities. I use to practice my flips while watching TV. If you like to dance, then get up and dance while watching TV. There are all different ways you can incorporate activity into your life. Try new things! I like to try different ways of being active. I didn’t think I liked hiking, but I tried it in college. Now I love it and try to find new or different places to go hiking.”

Before Sam left, she and the campers gathered outside to play a rousing game of clothespin tag. Activity Director Kyle Mcilrath challenged campers by telling them he had yet to lose a game of clothespin tag! Sam, the campers, and the counselors chased each other while snatching the clothespins clipped to their backs. We are happy to report that Kyle still holds his record for finishing with the most clothespins!

All too soon, it was time for Sam to leave. The campers thanked her for spending time with them. Sam has a busy summer ahead teaching gymnastics at camps across the country.

Thanks, Sam, for helping us get the first day of Forever Fit Camp off to a great start!

Despite a few newcomers to the Forever-Fit Summer Camp, all of the kids are interacting well and enjoying their more active lifestyles. At the conclusion of week three, they were rewarded for their hard work and commitment to healthy behavior with a trip to Riverside Water Park. Unfortunately, the employees overbooked their schedule, but the campers maintained positive attitudes and sat patiently on the bus as they were caravanned to another location. Upon arrival, they changed into their bathing suits and spent the next couple of hours splashing and playing in the water. Although not as large as Riverside, the alternative water park came complete with diving boards, climbing walls, and waterfalls, and the kids seemed much less concerned with amenities than they were with cooling off from the heat and enjoying each other’s company.

Administering to her project, camper Onivea polishes off her bird feeder with a beautiful coat of paint.

On the Monday immediately following their trip to the water park, the campers were treated to another special activity. They performed their morning routines as usual, and then Jeremy and Debra from Rocky Ripple Clayworks arrived with a pottery wheel, a fresh supply of clay, and a variety of other materials to test out the kids’ pottery skills and fulfill their interests in ceramic design. With step-by-step directions and careful instruction from their visitors, the campers spent just more than an hour sculpting birdfeeders and molding diversely shaped bowls. They solidified their projects by coating them with paint and etching their names in the bottom of their creations. Afterward, they offered Jeremy and Debra lunch and then watched as the guests left with a carload of clay fixtures to fire in the kiln and return to camp within a matter of weeks.
